BAN - BBCND Newsletter Summer 2020

BAN 2020 Summ      Annual Bromley Borough CND News       40p                                  Published by Bromley Anti Nuclear Group Notice from the Secretary: CND still very much needs support with their campaigns, especially since the Coronavirus has exposed the futility of spending  billions on new nuclear weapons when money is needed for essential services. CND is also supporting the  challenges of climate change working with XR, dealing with the refugee crisis, and the campaign to get the UK to sign up for  the Nuclear Ban Treaty. The selling of arms to Saudi Arabia continues and there are still concerns regarding UK's plans for Trident renewal, the use of drones and the dangers from nuclear power pollution from the Fukushima fall out. It would be really supportive if local Bromley Borough CND members could also join National CND, if they don't already belong.  Help is also badly needed to restructure Bromley CND and take on some of the responsibilities for its future co

Event 6th August 18:30 all welcome

Hiroshima Day Peace Picnic  Charlton House & Gardens   Charlton House, Charlton Road, London SE7 8RE   This year the South East London CND groups (Lewisham and Greenwich, Forest Hill and Sydenham, and Bromley Borough) hope to have our annual "peace picnic" in person rather than on zoom. So bring food and drink to share on the lawn behind Charlton House. At 7 pm we will adjourn to the Peace Garden for a minute's silence and poetry. There will then be live music whilst we finish the picnic. If progress of the pandemic means that meeting in person is not possible, we will do a zoom like last year. The photograph above shows last years zoom broadcasting team observing the minute's silence.

Report from London Region CND conference March 2020

Plenary 1 - Britain’s role in the World, Report of London CND Conference ‘An ethical foreign policy’ held at SOAS 7 th March 2020. Catherine West, MP for Hornsea & Wood Green Catherine stressed the need for new and younger members. This was covered by Plenary 3 which Ann attended. An Ethical Foreign Policy should be based on 3 pillars. Human Rights. Training. Security (This means security from nuclear weapons). The present British Government has singularly failed to address these problems. President Trump has ratcheted up the problems and made Nuclear War more likely. The USA has not participated in International Conferences since 2016 , especially the 2017 Ban Treaty when Trump stood outside the Hall at UN Headquarters where the conference was being held. BREXIT has resulted in a lessened impetus on disarmament issues. Problems of Climate Change have not been resolved. Problems in the Middle East have been exacerbated by the failure to resolve the issues of the Kurds squeezed bet

BBCND activism 2019/20

Hiroshima/Nagasaki Events 2019  Leaflets were distributed in Bromley, signatures collected on the petitions. Then we had a silent march through Bromley and walked to the lake in the Library  Gardens, where we scattered white chrysanthemums. We read poems and made statements. As usual a very moving occasion, and the silent march  we hope made some impact.  A ceremony was held in the Archbishop Tutu Peace Garden in Chinbrook Meadows, Grove Park, followed by the marking,  on August 9th, of Nagasaki Day. This was supported by Orpington Wilpf and Lewisham & Greenwich CND. We sent our photos to the Archbishop Tutu  Foundation as usual. National CND AGM 2019 National officers were elected: including Kate Hudson as General Secretary, Dave Webb as chair and Linda Hugl as  treasurer. A report on the conference is enclosed in this newsletter. Kate Hudson has offered her resignation, but will  continue for the time being. White Poppy Ceremony 2019 About 20 people attended - and we were grate
