The failed Trident test highlights an imbalance in UK defence strategy

Dr Marian Messmer Senior Research Fellow, International Security Programme The primary function of nuclear weapons is to deter war – and specifically nuclear war – between nuclear adversaries. But the Cold War was a different environment to today’s complex security environment, in which most nuclear-armed states have more than one nuclear competitor to deter, and many non-nuclear weapons states possess significant non-nuclear military capabilities. UK Foreign Office: Government will not assist victims of nuclear testing

Minister “pays tribute” to test survivors, but will not provide requested information or financial compensation. “The UK Government has no plans to respond to the joint statement made by Kiribati and Kazakhstan, as their statement is inconsistent with the UK's position on the legacy of nuclear tests. However, we recognise efforts to address the impact of historic nuclear testing and pay tribute to the veterans and civilians from the Pacific region involved in the tests. The UK has reviewed residual contamination relating to British nuclear tests on Kiribati and concluded that any required remediation had been undertaken.” Read this article by clicking HERE

Tributes to departed comrades by Ann Garrett

Peter Mullervy It is a real privilege to be here today to speak about Peter on behalf of Bromley and Beckenham CND Bromley Trades Union Pensioners Association ,Trades Union Council, and Bromley Peace Council. These groups offer their condolences to his family and friends. I have known Peter for many years, also his sister Joan and Father Frank, when I was a member of the communist party back in the 1970s and 80s. Peter used to bring Frank to Communist meetings at my former family home at 14 Hawes Rd< Bromley. They were some of the last Bromley branch meetings before it folded in 1989. I was strongly influenced by the family’s socialist views for democracy, freedom and peace. Peter was a great inspiration for his dedication and commitment, always speaking with honesty and sound knowledge, providing important factual historical information and topical research. He spoke regularly at Bromley and Beckenham’s White Poppy ceremony as a members of ex Services CND, condem...
